While traveling around Mono County enjoying the wondrous scenery, don’t let a trip to Mammoth or Bridgeport Traffic Court because of a 100+ mph speeding ticket spoil an otherwise splendid trip. You cannot just pay the fine for a 100+ mph speeding ticket and make it go away.
CA Vehicle Code (CVC) Section 22348, Speed Laws, paragraph (b) (1) states, “Upon a first conviction of a violation of this subdivision, by a fine of not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500).”
However, this traffic code was signed into law by the governor in 1959. There have been ten surcharges, penalties, and fees added to all traffic violations that make that “base fine” of $500, approximately $2,137 depending on the county.
A 100+ mph speeding ticket has a mandatory court appearance required of you or your attorney. All CA counties maintain jurisdiction of their traffic ticket so that the revenue goes straight into their treasury.
Although the courthouse at Bridgeport is the second-oldest courthouses in continuous use since 1880, you won’t want to spend too much time inside. It would be much better to take some snapshots, and move on to Bodie Gold Rush Ghost town, go swimming in Lake Mono, or visit the third-highest peak in CA at White Peak Mountain, or even the highest peak in the lower 48 at Mount Whitney, over on the Tulare-Inyo County border.
Although depressing and controversial, the Manzanar Japanese internment camp in Owens Valley accepts tourists for a one or two-hour historical and educational tour. It would be much better to spend your time there than in court. However, it is much smarter to hire a traffic attorney to make that courthouse visit for you.
Hiring a Traffic Attorney Will Save You from Taking off Work to Return to Mono County
Mono County, and indeed all of Owens county, is a beautiful area. You might even want to go back to Mammoth for skiing, but few will want to come back to fight a 100+ mph speeding ticket..
When you hire an attorney, they can save the expense of another trip, two or more days missed work, and possibly get the speeding ticket dismissed or reduced. Many drivers do not even consider the possibility that the judge could throw the ticket out if the issuing law enforcement officer (LEO) does not show up for court. You have a constitutional right to confront your accuser.
You might plead with the LEO to change your speed from 100+ to less than 100, but if they don’t, that doesn’t mean the judge can’t, especially when there are mitigating circumstances. If you feared for you or your family's safety due to a road rage incident, a judge might be sympathetic enough to dismiss or reduce your ticket.
When you are looking at seven years of increased auto insurance premiums that could cost you $13,000 or more, you need every advantage. An experienced and knowledgeable traffic attorney is the best advantage you can hope to raise a “reasonable doubt” about your guilt in a 100+ mph speeding ticket court appearance.
