A Sorrento police officer recently admitted that he never calibrated his radar gun, leading to the dismissal of hundreds of speeding tickets.
In September 2013, and again in October 2013, Officer James Bell stated that he "had not and did not" calibrate his radar gun. In light of the officer's testimony, the prosecutor has been forced to dismiss hundreds of speeding ticket cases, dating back to December 2012.
Authorities do not intend to re-open old cases in which the defendant has paid the ticket, because paying the fine has the same legal effect as pleading guilty. In such a case, there is no reason for the prosecutor to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
