In handing down a sentence for a DUI offense, a judge may order you to attend a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Victim Impact Panel (VIP). In order to prevent repeat DUI offense, MADD designed this VIP conference in order for the offender to understand how drunk driving has affected the victims and their families. Some of the speakers may be family members of a person who died as a result of a drunk driving accident.
Audiences at these conferences may be large, but the speakers do not assess blame or judgment on the individual required to attend the conference as a part of sentencing. Interaction and participation is not mandatory and at some conferences, audience members may ask questions of the speakers after the presentation. The program lasts about an hour and registration is required. There is a cost of approximately $20-$25 and you must present your ID at the conference. Audience members required to attend will be provided with proof of attendance to submit to the court.
